The Best Diet For Diabetics
November 30, 2009 Filed under weight loss
Diabetes is a disease that raises the glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream to higher than normal levels. This can be caused by the body being resistant to insulin, the hormone that aids the cells in metabolizing glucose for energy, or by a failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin for the body’s needs. In either case, it is important to maintain positive control over the level of blood sugar to prevent some major health problems, including the possibility of entering a diabetic coma. Figuring out the best diet for diabetics has been a topic of strong debate for quite some time.
For years, the prevailing wisdom was that diabetics should strictly avoid foods high in sugar and other carbohydrates. Sugar was considered to be the worst offender because it is more easily broken down into glucose, therefore it gets into the bloodstream faster than other carbohydrates. As a result, diabetics have relied on products with artificial sweeteners that eliminate the need for sugar in foods.
Currently, physicians understand that sugar and carbs are simply everywhere, so it is unrealistic to expect diabetics to avoid them completely. There are some brands of artificial sweeteners that don’t add any calories or carbohydrates to food, but it’s important to remember that just because a food is sugar-free doesn’t guarantee it is safe for diabetics.
In all honesty, the best diet for diabetics is the same as the best diet for other members of the family. This way, those with diabetes don’t need to limit themselves so severely. However, this is only possible given very meticulous monitoring the amount of carbohydrates a diabetic takes in every day. You have to look out for potatoes and pasta as much as sugary, sweet foods, as carbohydrates have sugars and starches in them as well.
The ideal diet for a diabetic would include more fresh fruits and vegetables. The natural sugars contained in these foods are different from glucose; therefore, the body can use them without danger of elevating the blood’s glucose level. In addition, they contain more fiber, which helps the body to eliminate waste better and make the person feel full so that fewer calories are consumed.
You don’t have to make one meal for the diabetic and another meal for the remaining family members. Basically, a diet for diabetics doesn’t have to be different than anyone else’s in their family, as long as they are careful. It should be a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables that includes some proteins and starches in moderation with few fats.
