Good health is important today and it obviously begins with a proper diet, however without a regular exercise routine you are missing out on one of the essential ingredients to a healthy lifestyle. If exercise is not your cup of tea, there is no need to worry; because, today there are several different options for fitness activity. Obviously, many people choose to participate in the traditional methods of aerobic exercise and weight lifting; however, there are other options. Some of the more popular nontraditional exercises include barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, pilates, and tai chi, all of which offer a variety to your workout and may prove to offer added health benefits that other exercise options lack.
The traditional workouts are often hard on a person’s body, especially as we get older. For example, aerobic exercise can be difficult on our bones and joints because it can cause stress to your body. Also, strength training is often easier for those who are younger and it gets more difficult as you age. Lastly, many of the traditional workouts are not as healing for our bodies, and although they may be healthy, they can induce injury.
While traditional exercise forms are still a great way to stay in shape and stay healthy, some of the nontraditional fitness activities available today are more low impact. Interestingly, they do not cause as much stress to the body as normal workouts might; in fact, many of them tend to be relatively healing and some even reduce stress. Currently, the most popular options available to participate in seem to be barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, and pilates.
The barre workouts are probably the least familiar of the exercises listed above, however, they are great workouts if you want to condition your muscles. Although the exercises are performed using a bar and mirror much like a ballerina, any person of any age or fitness level can complete the exercises. In fact, there are many studios offering classes across the country where people can attend and improve their strength without having to use weights. Many people today testify in favor of the barre workouts saying they are extremely effective.
Yamuna body rolling, YBR, is another form of exercise that many people are trying today, and it focuses on the use of 6 and 10 inch balls. The YBR is a unique type of ball exercise because it hones in to the specific areas of your body that need improvement and it works with your body type. One of the great features of YBR is that you are essentially getting as good of a workout that you would get with a hands on practitioner. And, typically a routine of YBR results in a leaner figure, elongated muscles, and increased flexibility.
Yoga, which has its origins from India, is arguably the most popular of the nontraditional exercises available today. Although yoga is a form of exercise, at its heart it is a form of meditation and it focuses a lot on the mental aspects of the individual in additional to the physical aspects that take place during the practice. Today, we practice yoga and the various asanas or postures when we attend a yoga class. There are actually different styles of yoga, however the most popular is probably hatha yoga.
Pilates is probably the trendiest of the nontraditional forms of exercise and it has definitely increased in popularity over the last few years. The fitness technique combines different aspects from yoga and aerobics giving it a unique newer feel that definitely fits in with the modern culture. When you participate in pilates, the focus is always on your center or core movements and breathing exercises are usually involved. You will find that every pose or exercise you do during a pilates session usually relates back to the core.
Lastly, tai chi is another form of alternative exercise that is gaining more popularity today, especially as we learn of its health benefits. Tai chi is a friendly environment for people of all ages and it is non competitive - people can complete the lass and poses at their own speed and pace. However, during a tai chi class every pose does flow together, so you do not get a break. Many people who consistently participate in tai chi say they have decreased stress, increased flexibility, improved strength, more energy, and a better mood.
It is obvious that the fitness world provides those who want to be healthy with many options and activities. Pick one that suits your style, needs, and preferences. The alternative methods of exercise are great options because they provide added health benefits and are not as hard on your body.
