Just because we want to lose weight doesn’t mean that we want to be ostracized from society. This is particularly an issue if we happen to be the family chef; nibbling our own lightweight morsels whilst the aroma of ‘real food’ wafts under our nostrils! This can be frustrating, so let’s look at how we can integrate our weight loss program into regular family meals.
Let’s start with portion sizes - whatever’s on our plate, if we want to lose weight we should eat less. So find yourself a plate that’s about two-thirds the normal size. You won’t feel so deprived, because you can still fill the plate when you serve up. Wait until the rest of your family or friends have started eating before you start. Then slowly savour every mouthful you take. (Not only will this prevent you from finishing much sooner than the rest, it will also leave you feeling more replete.)
Most family meals can be eaten when you’re dieting, if you restrict the amount of fat and carbohydrate on your plate. Make up for it with lots of vegetables. And avoid the temptation of crusty bread! For seconds, think carefully before you indulge yourself. A small baked apple is fine - simply leave out the custard or cream.
But you can also sneak in the odd diet meal for the whole family. Delicious low calorie meals can be created without anyone suspecting a thing! Fresh herbs make a great addition to spaghetti dishes - and add plenty of mushrooms and courgettes. Instead of oil, use tinned tomatoes and olives for juiciness.
When you’re shopping for food, always pick out lean cuts of meat. Remember also that fish can be a lower fat alternative. Whatever the rest of your family weigh, it’s still advantageous for them as well to eat lean meat. Roast chicken is a good all-rounder, just make sure you remove any skin and eat breast meat where possible. Select potatoes that have a naturally creamier texture, such as Vivaldi or Maris Piper. Then you can feel fulfilled without loading them with butter.
Watch out for breakfast cereals - some are loaded with sugar so always read the ingredients before buying. Cereal bars are best avoided too - they look like a healthy snack, but most are incredibly sweet. We also probably consume a load of hidden calories in our drinks. Choose sodas with artificial sweeteners, and make them last longer than usual by adding ice.
Alcohol contains a lot of calories, so when you’re socialising it’s good to find some alternatives. Try drinking tomato juice with ice or spring water. Watered down apple juice makes a passable wine lookalike if you don’t want to be different from the crowd.
It’s obvious that we’re not going to lose weight if we continue as we are. But it’s amazing how a small shift here and there can dramatically help along the way.

Weight Reduction Is Massive… It’s essential to grasp that the business of slimming is exactly that - a very profitable market. Several billion dollars of diet products are purchased every year.
OK, How Large Has This Got? Maybe you’re not classed as obese, but you’re probably somewhat overweight if you’re reading this. Statistics taken recently suggest that weight issues are a problem for around seventy per cent of Americans. Put another way, that’s 210 millions! And many other countries will shortly have a similar situation. But we don’t want this to happen!
In Great Britain, it’s estimated that one quarter of the adult population is at least 30-40 pounds overweight. But look at this - It might be around twenty five per cent now, but it could be ninety per cent by the middle of the century.
And yet why should it be that way? No-one wants this trend to continue. Sensible dietary advice is the key - not expensive products that line the pockets of big business.
Obesity can increase the risk of a number of diseases and ailments, such as - High Blood Pressure, Liver Disease, High Cholesterol, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnoea, Heart Disease and Heart Failure, Cancer, Type Two Diabetes & Problems with Mental Health. And so we’re not just out to look cuter - we’re out to preserve our health.
Reducing your weight and getting into good physical shape is more important than being thin. In truth, we most likely have a gut feel for the weight that works best for our body.
Those of us with kids should be thinking about their health as well. Parents need to lead by example, and guide their kids towards healthy choices. Nothing will change if we keep doing the same thing. Do you really want that burden for your offspring?
This means we MUST get to grips with healthy eating. Understanding good and bad nutrition is paramount. We have no chance of teaching our offspring how to eat well for good health if we don’t know how to do it ourselves. Look at this over the long haul. Generations down the line will be impacted on the actions that you take right now.

Our friendships can have quite an influence on how we live our lives. There’s a tangible link between the way we behave and the men and women we have friendships with. And yet we’re likely to have presumed this commonality concerned our likes and dislikes - for example we enjoy the same musical tastes as our friends, or hold similar political views.
However, it now seems that we also have weight challenges in common with those we associate with. The amount we eat is closely related to how much our best friends eat. An interesting study looking at how young people eat found that oversized children eat more when in the company of other oversized friends.
Indeed, all the young people studied (aged 9 to 15) ate more when they were with friends than strangers regardless of their size. But the greatest calorific intakes were observed when overweight chums snacked together. The results of this study revealed several key factors. It found that friends have a key function where consumption is concerned.
Candidly it’s no great revelation that many ate more when in the company of friends. That would doubtless be the same if adults had been surveyed. What’s more, as our friends don’t usually challenge what we do, we assume that means they condone our behaviour. Subconsciously we’re placing the permission ball in someone else’s court.
The researchers observed a whole mix of young people for this study. They were split into groups of two friends, or groups of two strangers. All were furnished with nibbles, fruit and vegetables. They also had various games to keep them occupied.
The familiar couples put away more food than the unfamiliar ones. But overweight friends ate the most of all. Below is an illustration of what was consumed.
Nearly seven hundred and fifty calories per person was consumed by the larger pairs of friends. Heavy kids with standard weight chums ate just under 450 cals, and standard weight kids ate approx 500 cals whatever weight their mate was. This influence extends to smoking and drinking as well with young teens.
The research team looking at food consumption had to conclude that peers played an influential role in a young person’s dietary habits. This sounds very negative, but of course it means that if youngsters were to associate more with friends who eat a balanced diet, then they too are likely to adjust their habits over time. A good argument for teaching sound nutrition!

Our BMI, or Body Mass Index is an indication of whether we are overweight or not. Our reading should come in somewhere in the region of top teens to mid-twenties. We have weight management problems if our figure is any higher than that. A BMI of more than 30 is considered obese. It becomes morbidly obese when the index goes over 40.
To work out your own index - Use a metric rule to measure your height. Then record your weight in kilograms. Your height should be multiplied by itself, then divide that figure by your weight.
For example if your height is 1.6 metres and your weight is 78 kilos, your BMI is 30.47 (1.6 x 1.6 = 2.56 then 78 / 2.56 = 30.47). As a BMI of more than thirty has been classified as obese, action would definitely be required in the above example.
If we persist with eating fatty and sugary calorie-laden food, we’ll never get a grip on our weight management. We can lower our fat reserves (and therefore our weight) if we trim down our portion sizes and stick to more natural foodstuffs.
You should avoid crash diets which usually end up with you either feeling ill or giving up in desperation. Crash diets are those that limit your intake to below a thousand calories for women and fifteen hundred calories for men. Programs like this tend to have a yo-yo effect on weight - it comes off quickly, then goes straight back on again when you inevitably stop.
Long-term weight reduction takes time. But if you just knocked 500 cals off your current daily intake, the results would start to show over time. So not the un-realistic promises fed to you from the instant remedy brigade, but a real solution to help you stay out of the danger zones.
It’s well understood that foods saturated in fat contain the highest calories. Therefore keeping fat to a minimum will significantly reduce your calories. Substitute fat with whole grains, vegetables and fruit. It’s amazing how quickly you’ll start to notice improvements in your health.
Avoid skipping meals - this really doesn’t help with calorie reduction. By the afternoon, you’ll be so hungry you might be tempted by chocolate or crisps. A number of lighter meals throughout the day is better in reality. Leaving yourself constantly hungry makes weight loss less likely. But eating frequent nutritious small amounts is the best way to fuel an efficient weight loss process.
