If Your Weight Loss Program Always Flatlines You Can Blame Charles Darwin - But Here’s a Simple Solution

Adaptive evolution is the reason that 95% of all weight lose programs fail. Think back to the Theory of Evolution taught in High School.

“How are weight loss and the Theory of Evolution connected?”

A whole lot, evidently. The human race evolved over millions of years through long periods of famine and relatively short periods of abundance. As a result we have become creatures of opportunity, getting our food wherever and whenever we could find it. So the human metabolism has also adapted to help us survive these periods.

“Sounds interesting, but how does that cause me to stop losing weight after a few weeks?”

Well, limiting or changing caloric intake is the keystone for most diets. After a while, the average metabolism will interpret this as a famine or natural disaster, so the metabolism automatically slows down in order to keep the body alive longer. This is why most diets will stop working after a few weeks, and why we sometimes feel sluggish on diets. It’s just nature’s way of trying to keep us alive.

“So what can we do?”

Glad you asked. We do something called “calorie shifting”. Studies show that it consistently promotes sustained weight loss.

“How does it work?”

You simply lower your caloric intake below your baseline level for a week to 10 days. It’s been established that the average metabolism will start to slow down after 11 days, as if you were experiencing a famine.

To stop the metabolism from slowing down, you then spend the next week to 10 days raising your caloric intake ABOVE your baseline. This makes the metabolism react as if the famine were over, so it speeds up again.

Once the metabolism speeds up, you then lower your caloric intake back BELOW your baseline. This will continuously keep the metabolism off balance so it never really slows down and there’s no sluggishness. See how it works?

There are many other things you have to do of course, so there’s a lot more to calorie shifting. There’s a requirement of eating the right kind of calories in at least 4 meals a day, for example. Plus, you have to drink up to 10 glasses of water a day. I’ll be discussing all of this in future articles.
