Researcher assumed in the 1980’s that the human body absorbed and digested simple sugars quickly, producing rapid increases in blood glucose level leading to the assumption to avoid sugar. But now scientists understand that simple sugars don’t cause the blood glucose to rise any more rapidly than some complex carbohydrates do. But, simple sugars are still empty calories and should still be minimized.

Diet and weight loss is closely related. Now when I say diet, I do not mean a special eating plan, like the Atkins Diet or the Blood Type diet. No, I mean the foods you eat every day. How many times a day you eat, etc. We all know that what you eat has a great effect on your weight and you could be eating in a way that is hampering your weight loss efforts.

Now you are probably asking how you can be eating wrong. It is actually quite hard to eat right all the time or even most of the time. In today’s society not everyone has enough time to make the correct meals or even enough money to buy the correct foods. And with all the different information on all the different foods, it can get confusing as to what is wrong or right.

For now let us talk about carbohydrates. For some reason, society has said to eat as few carbohydrates as possible. I am not disputing that you must not load up on them, especially as you get good and bad carbohydrates, but do not cut them out completely. They are broken down into glucose which stimulated the production of insulin. The insulin gets the sugar into your cells where it is then used as energy. Carbohydrates also keep you fuller for longer. The moral of the story? The fewer carbohydrates you eat, the less energy you have. And lack of energy triggers the need to eat more, thus resulting in weight gain. The best kinds of carbohydrates are whole wheat or brown products such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

But what about protein? Many diets promote high protein meals and yes, most of society generally eats high protein diets. Although high protein diets can result in weight loss, it is more than likely due to the fact that too much protein causes nausea, resulting in a loss of appetite. Although weight loss is also possible on a low protein diet, it is not the correct way to lose weight.

How about fat? Fat is the enemy, fat is the reason people are obese. Yes that is partly true however it is mostly the wrong kind of fat that is being eaten. You need essential fats, hence the reason they are called essential. People on low fat diets can harm themselves as research has shown that your body uses fat for energy, it helps maintain your body’s temperature and, if you are trying to conceive, your body needs fat. Essential fatty acids, found in vegetables such as avocados, provide you with Omega 3 and 6 which is vital for a healthy heart and mind.

So the question remains, why is a healthy diet vital for weight loss? Well if you read at the potential dangers of cutting out or loading up on carbohydrates, protein and fats, which most diet programs tell you to do, you can lose weight however it is a dangerous way to lose weight. In the end, the reason why few actually stick to these kinds of diets is because of the way they make them feel. The results are therefore temporary and not worth the risk.
