As far as treating scarring caused by severe injuries on the skin like wounds and skin problems like pimples and acne is concerned, we tend to connect it more with pricey surgical procedures performed by Hollywood cosmetic surgeons. Though it is true that these methods are indeed some of the more effective methods in helping get rid of scars, it is not a doable option for those that have limited finances. Good news is that there are alternatives, cheaper alternatives to the high-priced surgical route.

However, to find out more about these effective methods that will not cost you your life savings, we must first discuss those products and methods that may be cheap but are in no way effective as far as their scar healing claims are concerned.

While there are a lot of options out there that are not very expensive, most of them are, unfortunately, quite ineffective and are simply a waste of your money and time.

Vitamin E-based products - there are many anti scar products out there that brag of its capability to diminish manifestation of scarring because of vitamin E. Clinical trials performed to delve into this claim have shown negative results and have even shown probable adverse effects with about 30% of human subjects manifesting signs of allergic reaction to the products. Vitamin E does appear to provide moisturizing effect but no more than that.

Products based on onion extracts - there are a lot of scar reduction products in the market that are based on natural ingredients such as onion extracts. One such product is known as Mederma. Unfortunately for this type of anti scarring products though, trials have indicated that they do not work as advertised and may just benefit the skin the way petoleum jellies do. Studies have shown that it does nothing to reduce or heal scars but the good thing is, compared to vitamin E creams, onion extracts based creams does not cause allergic reactions.

Other products based on natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, aloe vera, lime juice, cucumber are also being sold out there to be a alternative solutions to scarring problems but neither of them have been tested clinically to prove their claims.

But other options are available, products that contain silicone as one of its ingredients, either in silicone sheets, gel or cream and they have demonstrated superb performance in treating scars especially for severe cases like keloidal and hypertrophic formations. Fortunately, there are clinical trials to back this up and as such, this form of scar treatment has been suggested as the best in removing or improving scars.

Silicone sheeting is ideal since it is not invasive and is quite painless and most especially, relatively cheaper compared to other options that work. This technique is even more effective if applied early in the wound healing process and is a well accepted method in treating burn injuries.

Good scar treatment doesn’t have to be painful and expensive as its surgical alternatives because there are more convenient, cheaper methods available that are backed up by scientific proof to be effective and beneficial.

There are a lot of options as far as scar reduction techniques are concerned. All you need to do is assess which is best suited for your needs through sound research and due diligence. One of such methods is known as the laser scar treatment procedure.
