Can cancer be inherited?
April 25, 2009 by Janet Vasquez

Cancer cannot be inherited, but the risk of developing cancer can be. That is, the tendency to develop cancer runs in some families, as has been shown with the discovery of specific abnormal genes that make a woman more likely to develop breast cancer under certain conditions. The presence of genetic abnormalities doesn’t mean that the disease itself is hereditary, however.
In cancers with a hereditary component, an abnormal gene is passed from parent to child. However, a cell becomes abnormal during a person’s lifetime because of additional changes in the DNA such as a spontaneous gene mutation or a cancer-causing agent (carcinogen) in the environment. Asbestos, cigarette smoking, and some pesticides are well-known carcinogens. According to die information that is currently available, the majority of cancers appear to be the spontaneous variety rather than the inherited kind linked to predisposition.
Another extremely important point to remember is that many people who have either an inherited cancer gene or a gene that has mutated spontaneously do not develop the disease. The abnormal gene might mean a tendency to develop a cancer, but additional mutations must occur before a tumor can develop. In fact, most cancer cells have a number of different defects in their DNA. Thus, one abnormal gene rarely causes cancer.
Genetic Counseling Genetic counseling is a new and rapidly evolving field that is important for parents who are concerned that they may pass a disease, such as sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, or cancer, to their children. Genetic counselors interview couples about their family histories to determine what type of disease may have occurred in relatives. For example, because some cancers, such as breast and ovarian cancer, go together, women whose relatives have developed either type of cancer at a young age may be at risk for either type of cancer. Under certain circumstances, a genetic counselor may recommend that a person have his or her genes examined in the laboratory. If a genetic abnormality is identified, the counselor can then discuss the potential risks for them or their children, the need for regular screening, and preventive measures.
Although genetic counseling can be helpful in some cases, it also raises a number of difficult questions:
- Can something be done to prevent the cancer? If nothing can be done to prevent the cancer, can more frequent testing for the cancer, and early detection, at least make a difference in terms of treatment and recovery? - Will the information make the person’s life better or worse? That is, will worry about the possibility of developing cancer dominate the person’s thoughts, so that his or her quality of life is diminished? - Will the information be kept confidential, so that insurance companies and employers don’t have access to it? (Insurance companies and employers may discriminate against a person if genetic testing indicates that he or she has inherited a tendency to develop cancer.)
Because questions such as these sometimes have unsatisfactory answers, many people, understandably, avoid genetic testing. The decision to undergo genetic testing is a difficult and personal one. It should be made only after discussion with an expert in oncology or genetic counseling.
Boxing Offers Great Workout Opportunities

Training to box is a high-intensity workout regimen that will make you healthier and much more physically fit. It is one of the most powerful programs out there today to help you achieve the strong, attractive body you desire, become more agile, and boost self-esteem. It is a total body workout that cannot be beaten.
A growing number of people are participating in boxing training as a form of regular exercise. These programs are especially good at developing arm and leg muscles. They also work on less tangible qualities like self-confidence and emotional gravity.
Develop a knockout body
A few years ago, members of the health care industry realized the great benefits you can get from training to box. These include improved heart function and muscle tone, to name a few. Martial arts began to meld into mainstream fitness videos in the form of Tae Bo and Cardio-Boxing.
New aerobics classes have mastered a blend of intense cardio and boxing moves like power jabs and hooks. As you become more adept, you can master any number of combination moves. This type of routine gives you an excellent overall workout and gets you in shape quickly.
Participants in martial arts exercise programs will usually perform their moves on imaginary rivals (you’ve probably seen aerobics trainers shadow-box), although with the appropriate safety precautions they can spar with one another. A well-equipped gym will provide medicine ball, heavy and speed bags, and other tools used to train boxers.
Beat the calories
Kickboxing and other similar training exercises aren’t just great for improving the way your body looks; these programs burn an enormous amount of calories in a relatively short amount of time-up to 600 per hour. They manage to keep your heart rate up at around 185% of its regular rhythm, which is the proper rate for getting cardiovascular benefits.
The long-term effects of boxing training
You reap lots of benefits from boxing classes: increased strength and endurance are some of them. You become more flexible and both muscles and joints grow stronger and better able to withstand movement. Your reflexes and the speed of your movements become stronger and more consistent.
Martial-arts type exercise programs are also great for the lower body, mainly the legs. They teach better balance and show you how to position your body for the most stability.
Moreover, knowledge gained from boxing and kickboxing classes will enhance your defensive skills and may come in handy in dire situations that require drastic measures. You will feel calm yet confident in knowing that you can defend yourself and your loved ones should the need arise.
No more attitude problems
Martial arts aren’t just about physical fitness. They also focus heavily on disciplining your mind and developing your inner self. In doing this, you will learn to deal constructively with stress and worry.
Many aerobic and fitness professionals advice beginners to take up boxing lessons. It allows them to start out at a comfortable pace until they can work themselves up to speed. Boxing training will push your body to the limit provided you are medically fit and conditioned.
Just like other exercise programs, this type of routine requires a lot of effort and a will to succeed. It will not provide an overnight transformation, but if you persist with the training you will be compensated with good health and a beautiful body.
Common Failures of Lap Band

Lap Band surgery has been hailed as being one of the easiest ways for a person to lose weight, but truth be told there are definitely some problems with the procedure. While these problems are not exactly endemic or typical of lap band surgeries, they are problems that can cause intense problems for the people that have undergone the surgery and for that reason are failures that people should know about before they actually go ahead and have the surgery done. The two most common failure of lap band would have to be migration errors and erosion errors.
The migration error is an error that takes place when the band that is being used actually ends up moving from one part of the stomach to another. The whole point of the lap band surgery is that when the band is inserted into the body, it can then be used to constrict the stomach and in doing so it can then be used by the person with the band to regulate the amount of food that they take in. However, the band is operating in an area of the body that does not have a large amount of friction and for that reason the natural movements of the human body over time can cause the band to move from one part of the stomach to another or even get dislodged from the stomach entirely in severe cases. This not only completely cancels the effectiveness of the band, but it also means that another operation needs to be scheduled in order for the doctor to go in and replace the band or maybe even remove it entirely if that is what the patient now wants.
The erosion error is an error that has similar results, although for a different reason. Rather than moving out of position or falling off where it is supposed to be, a band that experiences an erosion error actually sees part of the material within the band disappear entirely. This happens because of the friction forces such as they are between the stomach and other parts of the body and the band. When the person moves, the band rubs against these different parts. Over the course of time, the creation of that type of force can create holes in the layering of the band, causing parts of the band to erode away. If the error is particularly bad, these parts can then be absorbed by the body and potentially create some feelings of illness as a result. The erosion error is usually more serious than the migration error because of this possibility.
These are the two main common failures of lap band and of course they are not mutually exclusive events. If a person is particularly unlucky they can experience both errors and be in a very bad state. This is why it is important to know about these errors before you actually agree to have lap band surgery done.

Top 3 Fun Games For Kids’ Weight Loss!

Suppose that you’ve never worked out in life, and all of a sudden someone tells you that if you wish to get rid of your fat belly you, you have to hit the gym for two weeks straight and spend an average of six hours there per day! How would you react to that? Your first thought would be that it is better to keep your fat belly intact and watch that cool Hollywood movie instead of working so hard.
Well, that is the exactly the same way your kids think when they are asked to workout like crazy for the purpose of weight loss! However, if you ask them to do some fun activities which would keep them cheerful and help them lose weight at the same time, then nothing like it! In this article I will share three such fun activities for your kids!
1. Dog walking: Walking is one of the simplest ways to lose weight, but kids won’t want to walk without any incentive. Do you have a pet dog at home? If yes, the incentive could be that of taking the dog for a walk. If your kids are particularly attached to the pets at home, this would become simpler! Be a model to your kids and take the dog with you when going out for your regular morning walks, and your kids would soon follow suit!
2. The twister trick: Board games and video games make your kids fat for sure, but not all games are that bad. Consider for example the twister game! Would you call it dull and boring? Definitely not! It is one game which kids of all ages are sure to enjoy, and since they cannot play it sitting on the couch, it would help them lose weight as well!
Again you could take the initiative by playing the game for your kids at first, and since kids like to emulate adults, they would soon follow you!
3. Let the chair be filled with music: Okay, I mean musical chairs! This is a very well known game but very few people know that it could be used to make your kids lose the fat belly instantly! The game is pretty simple: just get several hula hoops and chairs and put them all close to each other. Let the music begin!
The kids are supposed to walk in a big circle around the hoops or chairs as soon as the music begins. Immediately after music stops, the kids have to jump fast into the hula hoops or the chairs; if anyone is unable to jump on the chair in time, he is sent back to the cheering section. Before the start of the next round of the game, you should take away one chair from the group!
Are You Killing Your Kids By Making Them Obese?

It is said that America tops the obese adult population in the world, which is of course true. However, one seems to overlook the fact that America is also home to the highest population of obese children. If WHO (World Health Organization) is to be believed, our world consists of more than twenty million obese kids, most of whom are in the age group of five-eight.
WHO also says that childhood obesity has reached the level of an epidemic in America, so much so that in the past three decades the number of obese American kids has more than tripled! Isn’t your child one of them too? It is time to take control of your kid’s life and help him lead the kind of comfortable and healthy life we would want him to lead! And this is only possible by helping him get rid of the extra pounds!
In fact, if America tops the number of obese kids, even third world countries are not far behind. You would think that an economically backward continent like Africa would have skinny kids because most of their parents are too poor to feed them properly, let alone overfeed them! However, very often our beliefs don’t coincide with reality. Just recently a special task force sent to Africa to gauge the health stats of the people living there came across more obese kids than malnourished children!
You may be thinking: why all this hullabaloo about childhood obesity? What is wrong if the belly of your kid if a lot fatter than his peers? The answer is: just like overweight adults, fat kids are also likely to suffer from harmful diseases such as high blood pressure, type 1 diabetes, hypertension, fatigue, heart diseases, and in some cases, even early death!
In reality, the root cause of childhood obesity has little to do with genetics and more with poor lifestyle habits. Often people add two and two and jump to the conclusion that the kid is fat because of his parents. But that is not true at all! Kids emulate the unhealthy habits of their parents and naturally become fat like them! If you and your kids follow healthy lifestyle habits, both of you would be able to get rid of fat very quickly!
Truth to be told, the onus of the rising levels of childhood obesity lies on parents to a great extent. We parents prefer our kids to have junk foods since they can be easily bought from outside and help save the time we would have spent on cooking! A diet rich in fat and sugar could only make your child fatter and fatter! There is really nothing new to be said about it. Unless you are willing to spend a little time and energy in cooking healthy foods at home, don’t expect your kids to become any slimmer!
Apart from making them eat healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, it is also important that you try to control their intake of soda and fizzy drinks!
Controlling the food habits of your kids is only half the battle won, the other half being that of encouraging them to become more active! If you are concerned about your child’s future and wish to offer him a healthy life, you haveto take him away from Xbox and PSPs to outdoor sports such as cricket, basketball, tennis, etc! Encouraging them to indulge in cardiovascular activities such as swimming, dancing, rope jumping, etc., would also help them burn fat and lose weight!
3 Surefire Ways to Keep Your Kids Away from Weight Gain!

There is really nothing surprising about the fact that America is host to the highest number of obese kids! If you ever visit a decent American fast food restaurant, you would find out almost an equal number of kids and adults eating out there! In fact people there not only eat fast foods outside but bring them at home to eat during lunch or dinner time! In short, fast food seems to have become almost an huge part of American diet!
Eating once in a while at a fast food restaurant is one thing, but making it a habit and considering junk foods to be part of your staple diet is going to make you and your kid fat and nothing more! These foods have an attractive outer appearance and also taste great in mouth, but once they go inside the body, they get deposited as fat and make the person overweight! Thankfully there are certain simple and easy ways to get rid of this menace. Read on to find out about these ways!
It would of course be wrong on your part to put the entire blame of adopting unhealthy eating habits on kids. After all, don’t children pick up habits only from their parents? They have enough knowledge to understand what their parents are doing, but are not intelligent enough to differentiate between good and bad eating habits!
As a parent, it is your duty to guide your kid during his childhood. Many parents, some purely out of laziness and others because of lack of time, ask their children to have their fill at a local fast food restaurant! Why? It is easy and effortless, since parents don’t need to spend time on cooking! The concept may look attractive on the surface but the ending is definitely not so good!
Now the question-why should you worry about your kids’ health! Kids should remain fit and healthy not just for cosmetic reasons and social acceptance but to keep themselves away from harmful diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc., which go side by side with obesity! If you don’t want your kid to suffer from these terrible maladies and die an early death, your best bet is to start taking the following three measures right now!
1. Breakfast is important: Starting the day with a healthy breakfast is as much important for you as your kids. Very often, adults skip breakfast citing ‘lack of time’ or ‘important business appointments’ as excuses. Children too follow them, their excuses being either ‘lots of homework’ or ‘getting delayed for school’. However if you or your kid skip breakfast, it won’t be unnatural for either of you to gorge on a couple of burgers later in the day when you would no longer be able to put up with hunger!
Eating breakfast regularly is as vital as having a healthy breakfast. White breads, sodas, burgers, French fries, etc. are NOT what you should include in your kids’ breakfast! Kids should have a breakfast rich in protein which can be found in plenty in chicken, eggs, etc. Salads are also a good breakfast food! Apart from that, any homemade meal cooked using low-calorie oil would make for an ideal breakfast food!
2. Make the food attractive: Unlike adults, kids won’t eat anything which doesn’t taste or look good. They may not be want to eat something as dull as vegetables, but top it with cheese, and they would lick the plate dry! Same goes for pasta. Instead of serving them plain pasta, try serving it in “shapely” form!
To give you an idea, how about a triangular or octopus-shaped pasta! The more visually attractive the food is, the more attracted they would be to it! Slowly they would get so accustomed to healthy meals that their addiction to junk foods would wear off!
3. Let them eat small: The principle of eating in small portions applies as much to kids as adults. It is no use forcing your child to eat a bucketful of rice when he doesn’t need it! Instead, you should serve him the same rice in three or four smaller portion!
Kids are habitual grazers, which mean that they would take longer to eat than an adult! This is a good habit, so don’t discourage it! Let them enjoy every bite of the food they eat, as they are likely to become satisfied quicker this way than otherwise! As a result, there is much less of a chance of them ever overeating!
An Absolutely Fantastic Technique to Keep Your Kids Slim!
April 13, 2009 by Frances Norah Smith
We all know that the only technique to keep our kids from getting any fatter is by making them eat healthy fruits and vegetables as well as forcing them to stay away from junk foods. However, any parent knows that it is easier said than done! After all, which kid would want to give up on the tasty junk foods for the sake of fruits and vegetables! Well, good news is that there is a little trick which works wonders in this case! In this article I will talk about that little-known but useful trick!
The trick is that of hiding healthy foods in the guise of ‘comfort’ foods. How about a spinach burger, or a ’soft drink’ made up of just plain water with a tad of sugar and a pint of natural lemon or mango flavor? How about replacing butter with margarine for the purpose of cooking those delicious and yummy popcorn balls? There are plenty of ingenious ways you can use to make your kids eat healthy foods without much fuss!
Now, there are certain things to take note here:
1. First of all, contrary to what many parents believe, there is nothing unethical about tricking your kids into eating healthy foods; the only ‘bad’ thing which is going to happen as a result of this trick is that your child would be more and more addicted to healthy foods and his addiction towards junk foods would automatically disappear over time!
Most of the organic fruits and vegetables out there are rich in fiber, among other nutrients! Therefore these foods help keep your kids full for a long time, and consequently, their appetite for junk foods is killed!
2. Secondly, while it is true that this trick only works for young children, it is also true that if you make them accustomed to healthy foods right from their infancy, it would be easier for them to incorporate healthy eating habits later in life, and when that happens, you won’t really need to trick them anymore by offering healthy foods camouflaged as junk foods! Remember that habits, good or bad, are adopted by human beings right from a very young age!
3. Thirdly, in the quest of making our children eat healthy foods, we must not lose sight of the foods they may be allergic too! Milk may be good for the growth of kids, but many kids are lactose intolerant and as such, cannot digest milk properly! The only way is to offer skimmed or ‘fat-free’ milk instead!
Also there are many kids who are allergic even to the innocuous potatoes! If your kid doesn’t like potatoes no matter how you cook them, then there is more to it than its bland taste. However if your kid seems to prefer potato chips in place of roasted or steamed potatoes, then it is just an unhealthy food choice which needs to be taken care of. Granted that potatoes are high on carbs, but still, steamed potatoes are lower on calorie content than potato chips; plus your kids need carbs anyway!
